As we get older, we inevitably think about the way our role in society changes — and that includes our attitude towards politics and activism.
Should middle-aged and older people remain on the front lines of social change, or gracefully step aside to let the young shape the future they will inherit?
The answer isn’t simple. Ageing doesn’t erase passion, insight or moral responsibility. In fact, older people can bring experience, historical perspective and resilience that can deeply enrich political and social movements.
Many people in their 60s and 70s now have fought decades-long battles for important causes, and their continued involvement provides continuity and wisdom that younger activists can draw upon.
However, it’s also important to acknowledge that generational balance matters. Those in their 20s and 30s are not only the inheritors of the world’s challenges but also its greatest hope for transformation. They bring urgency, new ideas and digital fluency to activism.
In that context, stepping back doesn’t mean disappearing; it can mean stepping aside to create space for new voices, while still offering support and guidance.
Is it a duty to remain engaged? For some, yes. The urge to stay involved is an imperative driven by lifelong values.
Issues don’t stop mattering at retirement. If anything, older generations have more at stake in defending social safety nets and community values they spent decades building.
For some, activism in later life is a powerful choice. For others, there’s dignity in deciding to focus on personal wellbeing, family or quiet reflection after a lifetime of service.
Ageing doesn’t mandate political withdrawal, but nor should it demand eternal engagement.

Brett, good insight. I think a signficant percentage of the people at the main New York City protest Saturday were 50 and above, many in their 70s. I kept waiting for Abbie Hoffman and a few Joan Baez songs.
