Fun facts
Over its decades-long run, The Simpsons has built one of the richest supporting casts in television history — far beyond its main family. There isn’t an official tally, but fans and archivists estimate there are well over 100 named “extras” or recurring background characters in Springfield, many of whom pop up for a single gag and then quietly become part of the town’s fabric.
Some of the more memorable include the permanently bewildered Gil Gunderson, the squeaky-voiced teen (whose name is, fittingly, never revealed), and the ever-unlucky Hans Moleman. Others, like Disco Stu, with his retro catchphrases, and the mysterious Bumblebee Man, add an absurd flavour to crowd scenes.
What makes these characters special is how they reward long-time viewers by turning fleeting jokes into running gags. In Springfield, even the extras have personalities and just enough backstory to make the world feel surprisingly real.
